"I don't like
country, but I like you guys." It's a comment that Brennen Leigh has heard
more than once.
At the age of 15
Brennen Leigh's professional career began in her hometown of
Fargo-Moorhead (North Dakota-Minnesota respectively) performing with her
brother Seth in the Edgar Stevens Band, named after the band's fictitious
booking agent.
The band featured
Brennen on lead vocals, an upright bass, acoustic guitar, and drums in its
effort to play an odd mix of mostly unoriginal music from Joan Osborne and
Creedence Clearwater to the Violent Femmes and Rush. "Our first gig was at
a Christian coffeehouse in Fargo" recalls Brennen. "we shared the bill
with a rock band. I think it was their first gig too." "I think people
liked us mainly because we were different. Who else in town played
(Heart's) "Barracuda" with acoustic guitar and upright bass?"
